Breeds available:
Duroc: This breed is noted for its superior meat quality. Interstitial
fat (fat within the muscle) gives great flavour & texture
when purebred Duroc is used as a terminal sire.
Yorkshire: Tremendous mothering
ability and great legs make this breed the breed of choice to
cross with the prolific Landrace breed in an F1 program.
Landrace: This long, white,
prolific breed is the natural mate for use in a cross-breeding
program with Yorkshire to produce the prolific F1 York X Landrace
gilt. These single-cross females are the most popular commercial
sows in Canada.
Canadian
Swine Genetics: Canadian purebred breeders have co-operated
for over 50 years in a testing program that is second to none in
the world. This system, operated by the Canadian Center for Swine
Improvement (CCSI) in Ottawa keeps records on close to 10,000 nucleus
sows across Canada. Using the latest in BLUP technology, CCSI provides
selection data to swine breeders to make the best decisions to improve
their genetics. Go to www.ccsi.ca for a complete picture of the Canadian system for swine genetic
selection.
